Recitation Error During Prayer

Is There a Special Supplication to Recite to Overcome Laziness?

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Is there any special dua to recite if laziness catches you or is saying the ista’dah (aouzubillah) sufficient

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

One of the supplications that one can use is the following: Anas (Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to say, ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from the torments of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations of life and death.’ [Bukhari]

Allahumma inni a`udhu bika min al-`ajzi wal-kasli wal-jubni wal-harami wal-bukhli, wa a`udh bika min adhabi’l qabri, wa a`udhu bika min fitnati’l mahya wal-mamat.

Ibn `Allan notes that laziness means a sluggishness or dullness which is unbefitting in one’s acts of worship. How many a ‘normal’ act was considered great — and an act of worship due to the magnified intention therein. Remember that the strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer.

To sum up, we don’t just supplicate and hope that things will happen. Rather, we take the appropriate means and then rely upon Allah. This is the sunna.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
