Should Veterinarians Treat Dogs?

Question:

Is it better for vets not to treat dogs?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

No, the lives and wellbeing of dogs like all other animals besides pigs are sacred (hayawan muhtaram), and Allah wants us to keep them alive and well. There is nothing wrong even in specialising as a canine vet.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “A prostitute once passed by a dog panting near a well. Thirst had nearly killed him, so she took off her sock, tied it to her veil, and drew up some water. Allah forgave her for that.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Just because we are commanded to wash things that dogs eat or drink from, it does not mean that they are not sacred or that they do not have a right to be healed.

I pray this helps.
