Is It Permissible to Crochet Animals or Figures Without Facial Features?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible to crochet animals or figures without faces, such as a whale without eyes? Are features like ears, arms, legs, and a nose permissible if eyes and a mouth are omitted?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It will only be permissible to crochet if the animals and figures have a face but without the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.
Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) as saying, “Angels do not enter a house (or any other place) where there are statues or pictures.” [Muslim]
Scholars have derived various insights regarding the prohibition of depicting living beings. Many believe that images with incomplete features—such as those lacking eyes, ears, nose, or mouth—are permissible. Consequently, the creators of these images are not subject to the same warnings, as these representations do not “compete” with Allah’s creation.
