Is It Permissible to Kiss or Prostrate Towards Calligraphy of the Quran?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible to prostrate to or kiss calligraphy of Allah’s names or the Quran?
Can one prostrate to or kiss calligraphy of Allah’s names or the Quran out of love and reverence?
Does the ruling differ if the calligraphy or Quran is not in the direction of the Qibla or displayed on a wall?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is permissible to kiss calligraphy of Allah’s name or the Quran as a sign of respect, regardless of whether it is on a wall or not facing the Qibla. However, it is not permissible to prostrate in front of any kind of calligraphy. Instead, one should prostrate on the floor while facing the Qibla, as this is the sunna and correct manner of prostration.
[Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Prostration Raises Degree and Erases a Sin
Thawban (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “You must perform many prostrations to Allah, for you do not prostrate to Allah but that Allah will raise you one degree for it and erase one sin for it.” [Muslim]
The Prophet Prostrates to Thank Allah
Abu Bakra (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) if he received good news or something pleasing, would fall down in prostration from gratitude to Allah. [Abu Dawud]
