Is it Permissible to Use Tawidh Written on Dissolvable Paper and Ink?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible to write Quran verses on a sheet, put it into water, and drink it? There are also some Quran sheets of eatable paper in the market, where you can put the paper into the water and drink, including the paper.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is permissible to consume dissolvable paper with Quranic verses and prophetic remembrances written on it, as long as the paper and ink used are pure and edible. However, it is an important sunna practice and daily habit to recite the daily Quranic suras, verses, Names, and Attributes of Allah, and prophetic remembrances regularly, and only use the Quranic sheets as a last resort. There is a saying: why have something canned when you can have fresh.

Established Practice of the Companions and Followers

‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr (Allah be pleased with him) would teach these words to children; whoever of them could remember it, and whoever could not remember, he would write it and hang it around his neck.

Ibn Abi Shayba (Allah be pleased with him) also transmitted from Abu ‘Isma: he said, “I asked Sa’id ibn al-Musayyab about tawidh, and he said: ‘There is no harm when it is on leather.’”

And he transmitted from ‘Ata (Allah be pleased with him)that he said about a menstruating woman who had a tawidh on her: “If it is leather, she should take it off, and if it is on a silver thread, if she wishes, she may put it on and if she wishes she need not put it on.”

And he transmitted from Mujahid (Allah be pleased with him) that he would write tawidh for people and hang it on them.

He transmitted from Abu Ja’far, Muhammad ibn Sirin, ‘Ubaydullah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, and Dahhak proof that they would permit writing tawidh and hanging it or tying it around the upper arm, etc.
