What Determines If Palmitic And Linoleic Acids Become Permissible?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Do palmitic acid and linoleic acid undergo istihala, like stearic acid, oleic acid, and myristic acid, since they are chemically identical regardless of whether derived from animal fat or plant oil?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Leading contemporary Hanafi scholars have said any product that contains stearic acid, its derivatives, and similar chemically identical acids will be permissible to use due to going through chemical transformation (istihalat al-‘ayn) and widespread affliction (‘umum al-balwa).
However, if you can find an alternative, then you may use that to avoid misgivings. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
