Are Ombre Powder Eyebrows Permissible In Islam?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I have sparse eyebrows, which have been an insecurity for years. I want to look pretty for my husband and ideally have eyebrows when I wake up. There’s a new procedure called “ombre powder eyebrows” and “combination eyebrows,” semipermanent makeup lasting 1-3 years. Are these procedures permissible in Islam and for wudu as well?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Ombre powder eyebrows are similar to microblading, a form of tattooing, which is impermissible because both methods involve depositing pigment into the skin. However, alternatively, there is no harm in dyeing your eyebrows and eyelashes for your husband. In fact, making yourself up for him is praiseworthy and encouraged.
Main Difference Between Microblading And Ombre
The main difference between microblading and ombre is the technique used to implant the pigment under the skin. Microblading utilizes tiny strokes that resemble hair to create a realistic appearance, while ombre employs shading to achieve a more made-up look.
Wudu with Microbladed Eyebrows
If someone has previously microbladed their eyebrows, they can continue performing wudu until the microblading is completely removed. This is because the removal process occurs gradually and requires several sessions.
Ibn Abidin mentioned in his Radd al-Muhtar, that the ruling for tattooing (washm) is the same as dying one’s hair or clothing with a filthy substance: after washing the area, it is considered pure and clean (tahir), and the remaining trace is excused, because it is a trace that can only be removed by operation, which is considered a hardship in terms of the rulings related to purity and filth. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Also, as a note, any product that prevents water from reaching the skin will make it impermissible. They must be removed before you can perform prayers.
