Are Women Allowed to Thread and Pluck Their Eyebrows?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is a woman allowed to shape/groom her eyebrows by (1) threading or (2) plucking with tweezers?

Is a woman allowed to have her eyebrows tinted (lasting typically for a few weeks), and, separately, does this interfere with/hinder performing wudu?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Threading, Plucking, and Microblading

It is not permissible to shape and groom one’s eyebrows by threading and plucking with tweezers. Microblading is also essentially the same. However, if one has excess hair or hair, not in line with others that seem abnormal, these few sticking-out hairs can be removed. Likewise, dense and bushy eyebrows can also be trimmed to the regular size of the average person with natural, normal eyebrows.

Tinting/Dyeing Eyebrows

Women are allowed to tint/dye their eyebrows, which will not affect the wudu. The following need to be considered:

  • the color of the dye should not draw attention, so just a regular neat application without overdoing it
  • the using colors that can attract attention and be seen as the adornment of the shameful
  • the dye is ethical and does not have any possible harmful or allergic reactions [Ibn ’Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Indarpati, Fatawa Tatarkhaniyya; Abdul-Haq al-Dehlawi, Lama’at al-Tanqih]

Healthy Shame, Conscience Brings All Goodness

‘Imran ibn Husayn (Allah be pleased with him) reported the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Modesty does not bring anything but goodness.”
In another narration, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Modesty is all that is good.” [Bukhari; Muslim]
