Question
Can a menstruating woman enter the masjid or touch the Quran for a hifz class?
Answer
In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all beings, and may peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad.
I pray you well. Your classmates are incorrect on this point. In the Hanafi school, it is not permitted for a menstruating lady to enter the masjid or to touch a copy of the Quran. [Ibn ‘Abidin Radd al-Muhtar]
Speak to your teacher, explain the situation, and try to reach an understanding with her.
There is a position in the Maliki school that permits someone learning and teaching the Quran to touch the Mus’haf and recite the Quran even whilst menstruating, but that is something we should consult with someone trained in the Maliki school for the particular details.
Otherwise, it’s best for you to stay away from the masjid at those times, and intend to honor and revere what Allah has honored. That is best for you.
“And whoever honors the rituals of Allah, it is best for them in the sight of their Lord.” [Quran, 22:30]
