Do I Need To Wash New Clothes?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Assalamu ‘alaykum.

Do I need to wash new clothes bought online as they may be najis?

Answer

Wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

I pray you are well.

No, you can assume that the clothes are all pure. The default ruling of all things that are not intrinsically impure – such as anything aside from pigs – is that it is pure. (Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar)

Remember, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Indeed, the [practice of] the Religion is ease itself.“ (Bukhari) This ease comes from learning the essential details, applying them, and then not worrying about matters beyond one’s awareness or control.

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
