Question

How do I calculate Zakat on gold-plated jewelry? If I sell gold or silver jewelry during the lunar year, must I still calculate it in my Zakat?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Zakat on Gold-Plated Jewellery

One is not required to pay Zakat on gold-plated jewelry unless the amount of gold in the plating is 50% or greater than the other materials beneath it. [Maydani, al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab]

Gold Sold in the Middle of Lunar Year

If you sold some of your gold/silver in the middle of the lunar year, you are not obliged to pay Zakat on that gold as it is no longer your possession. [Maydani, al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab]

However, the money made from the sale will need to be added to your wealth for calculation.

Hope this helps
