Is Disclosure of a Concealed Past Sin Required Before Marriage?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

I committed a serious sin in the past, repented sincerely, and have not returned to it. Allah concealed it. A prospective spouse has strict criteria regarding a woman’s past and is asking me directly for a yes-or-no answer.

I do not want to lie, nor disclose what Allah has covered. Is declining to answer deception? And if he cannot proceed without an answer, must I withdraw?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah reward you for your concern to uphold both truthfulness and the covering of Allah. Striving for this balance is itself a sign of faith and sincerity.

You are not required to disclose what Allah has concealed, and choosing not to answer is not considered deception.

What Allah has concealed, you are commanded to keep concealed, of yourself first of all. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “All of my Community will be pardoned except those who flaunt their sins.” [Bukhari; Muslim]

Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy on him) counts retelling past sins among the harms of the tongue: it tears the covering Allah drew over you and spreads what should stay buried. [Ghazali, Ihya Ulum al-Din]

Your past, which Allah has covered, is not something a prospective husband has a right to know. What concerns him is your present state, your religion, and anything ongoing that would affect the marriage. A sin that is over, sincerely repented from, and concealed by Allah is not among these matters.

What You May Say

Tell him plainly that you do not discuss your past, that it is a matter between you and Allah, and that you will not lie to him about it either way. That is honest and complete.

You are not hiding a fact about your present; you are declining to publicize what Allah has hidden, which is exact.

Do not deny the sin outright, as lying is neither necessary nor permitted. The way forward is to uphold truthfulness while maintaining the covering of Allah.ay out of this, and it is not needed.

If He Cannot Accept That

If he chooses to step back, allow him to do so. You are not required to withdraw first, nor to purchase the marriage by disclosing what Allah has concealed. If someone insists on uncovering what Allah has covered, this may indicate how he would approach your past within the marriage.

Trust that Allah may be protecting you from harm.

Repentance Closes the File

Sincere repentance erases what came before, and Allah does not ask you to bring it forth again. Maintain the good opinion of Allah that led you to repent, and ask Him to grant you a spouse who will honor what Allah has honored and covered.

And Allah knows best.
