Is Fine Bone China Dinnerware Permissible To Use?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I wanted to know what the ruling is on using dinnerware that is made of fine bone china. I am not sure what animal bones are used and if it was slaughtered in a halal manner. The majority of the dinnerware is from the West.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health.

It is not necessary for the bones of an animal to come from an animal that was slaughtered in a halal manner. According to the Hanafi school, the method of slaughter does not affect the status of the bones, which are always considered pure.

Imam Marghinani (Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Hidaya: The hair of unslaughtered animals and their bones are ritually pure because they are not considered to be characterized by life. [Marghinani, al-Hidaya; Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
