Question: My question is on fasting outside of Ramadan. According to Hanafi Fiqh is it necessary to make up a broken/incomplete fast if it is not during Ramadan?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

There is scholarly consensus that it is obligatory to make up an invalidated obligatory (fardh) fast.

As for an invalidated sunna or voluntary fast, it would be necessary (wajib) to make this up. This is because of the principle: completing an act of worship voluntarily begun is necessary (al-shuru` mulzim). [`Ala al-Din `Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya; Haskafi, al-Durr al-Mukhtar]

And Allah alone gives success.
