Is It Permissible to Swear by Allah When Asked by Parents?

Question

Can a person swear on the Quran by saying, “In the name of Allah, I have not committed such a sin, as Allah has protected me from it,” if their parents ask them to?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

It is permissible and not sinful for someone to swear by the Name of Allah to affirm that something happened or didn’t happen in the past. This is assuming that you, in fact, did not commit the sin in question.

Take note that swearing should only be done when necessary or when there is a great benefit. The scenario you describe seems to be a justified instance of swearing.

It is not encouraged to swear by the Name of Allah where not justified, as it is not something to be taken lightly. It is especially wrong to swear when one is lying; one of the greatest major sins is to falsely swear by Allah.

The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The major sins are associating partners with Allah, disrespecting Allah, killing an innocent soul, and falsely swearing (by Allah).” [Bukhari]

Hope this helps
