Is It Sinful to Have Sexual Conversations with an AI Chatbot Acting as a Spouse?

Question

Is it sinful to engage in sexual conversations with an AI chatbot designed to act like a wife, even if it has no images? If so, is it a major or minor sin? Can the chatbot be used for normal conversation instead?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Engaging in sexual conversations with an AI chatbot designed to simulate a wife is sinful, even if it does not involve images. The degree of sin may start as minor but can lead to major, depending on how frequently and severely it is used.

Persisting in Sin

If one persists in committing a minor sin until it becomes a part of one’s lifestyle and does not repent, then it would be deemed a major sin since that indicates little care and concern about one’s religious practice. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar; Ibn Nujaym, Fath al-Ghaffar Sharh al-Manar]

No Sin too Major, No Sin too Minor

Sa‘id ibn Jubayr (Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man said to Ibn ‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with him), “How many major sins are there? Are they seven?” Ibn ‘Abbas said, “They are closer to seven hundred than only seven, yet no sin is too enormous if forgiveness is sought, and no sin is too minor if committed stubbornly.” [Tafsir al-Ṭabari and mentioned by Ibn al-Muflih in al-Adab al-Shar‘iyya, grading it as authentic]

Avoid Obsessions

As a Muslim, it is important to avoid immoral obsessions that can harm our faith and physical and emotional well-being. Using online programs can be very harmful, whether or not the content is generated by AI. The reasons behind such content are often the same, and the resulting harms can be just as damaging, if not more so.
