Must a Woman Observe Hijab Before Her Female Cousin’s Son?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

Am I required to observe hijab in front of the son of my female double cousin once he reaches the age of discernment?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

It is, indeed, an obligation for a Muslim woman to wear hijab before her cousin’s son. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

The cousin and, by extension, their children are not considered unmarriageable kin (mahram) in this circumstance. [Ibid.]

Hope this helps
