Was I Spreading Filth on My Body in the Shower after Not Cleaning Myself in the Toilet?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
I used the washroom, but I didn’t clean myself properly, and then I went to shower. In between the shower, I realized I needed to clean myself well, so I sat on the toilet again to remove the filth, but that made me realize that the filth must’ve spread to my legs by now. Is all of my lower body filthy now?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
The water that was flowing on your body, including your legs, was pure even after reaching your private parts, which were affected by filth. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]
The reason for this ruling is that the water coming from the shower was pure and flowing. Thus, as long as no traces of filth (smell, color, odor) are manifested, this flowing water will remain pure even if mixed with filth. This is obviously the case in your situation when considering the extremely small amount of urine left on your body after you relieved yourself. [Ibid]
Nonetheless, you were right to go back to the toilet to remove urine properly in order to be sure to stop the leaking. [Ibid]
Once, the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him), while passing through one of the graveyards of Medina or Mecca, heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said, “These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid).” The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) then added, “Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends).” The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) then asked for a green leaf of a date palm tree, broke it into two pieces, and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, “I hope that their torture might be lessened till these get dried.” [Bukhari]
