What Is the Ruling on Breaking the Fast Due to Weakness after Vomiting Unintentionally?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I vomited a large amount after suhur and was feeling weak, and was experiencing diarrhea. I forgot that unintentionally vomiting doesn’t break the fast, so I drank electrolyte water and later ate to take medicine. Will I have to do kaffara along with the makeup fast?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health.

You will only have to do a make-up (qada) of the fast. You broke the fast due to feeling weak and having diarrhea, which can make you fall severely ill.

It is permitted to break the fast when suffering from an illness if a person reasonably:

  • Fears an increase in one’s illness;
  • Fears a delay in recovering from one’s illness;
  • Fears falling sick. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; Tahtawi, Hashiyat al-Tahtawi ‘Ala Maraqi al-Falah]
