When Does Ailing-Eye Discharge Affect the Validity of Wudu?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If fluid from an ailing eye is impure only when it overflows, would wiping or removing it with a tissue before it accumulates to the point of overflowing make it impure?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I hope you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

If fluid comes out of one’s ailing eyes, regardless of whether it overflows or not, it will invalidate wudu.

If liquid water comes out of one’s eyes due to an infection, sore, or wound, that will invalidate the wudu. However, if a watery liquid comes out of one’s eyes due to discomfort from dirt or an eyelash, etc., that will not invalidate the wudu. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
