The name of Abu ‘Ubaida Ibn al-Jarrah (Allah be pleased with him) was Amir Ibn Abdullah Ibn Jarrah. His father’s name was Abdullah, and his grandfather’s was Jarrah. He was given the agnomen: Abu ‘Ubaida. This agnomen of his prevailed over him, so he is known mainly by it. Jarrah was his title, a custom amongst the Arabs, which was his grandfather’s name. His mother’s name was Umaima Bint Ghanam.
