Do Duas Remain Unanswered for 40 Days After Consuming Haram?
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
If someone eats something haram, do their duas remain unanswered for 40 days, or is this lifted with sincere repentance?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Prayers not being accepted for 40 days is mentioned in Prophetic narrations only for the consumption of alcohol and intoxication.
It does not seem to be the case for consuming other impermissible things such as unslaughtered meat.
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,
“Whoever drinks wine and gets drunk, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he dies, he will enter the Hell Fire. If he repents, Allah will relent to him.” [Tirmidhi; Nasai’, and others]
Repentance
Even if this ruling were extended to other impermissible things besides intoxicants the possibility of atonement through repentance would also apply.
