Is Human Evolution Compatible With Adam’s Creation and Are Doubts Sinful?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

How do we reconcile the creation of Adam with scientific theories of human evolution? And are involuntary doubts about Allah sinful?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate.

Allah Most High is the Creator of all things, and every change in creation is by His will. Adam (peace be upon him) is the first human being, and all people descend from him and from our mother Eve (peace be upon her). The timing of Adam’s creation, or whether other human-like beings existed before or alongside him, is not a matter required by our faith. As for involuntary doubts, the Sacred Law does not hold you accountable for them.

Allah Is the Creator; Causes Have No Power in Themselves

Allah Most High says, “Allah is Creator of everything” [Quran 13:16]. Every change in creation—whether in living things, the earth, or anything else—is by Allah’s creating. He alone brings about causes, effects, and the link between them.

To believe that “nature,” “random mutation,” or “natural selection” have power on their own is to ascribe partners to Allah. The Sunni understanding, as Shaykh Nuh Keller explains, is that Allah alone creates causes and effects and joins them together.

Adam Is the First Human; Humanity Descends from Him and from Eve

Allah Most High describes our origin: “fear your Lord who created you from a single soul, and created of it its mate” [Quran 4:1, in the translation of Shaykh Nuh Keller’s Quran Beheld]. The verse continues with the dispersal of a multitude of men and women from the two of them.

Adam (peace be upon him) is our first father. Eve (peace be upon her) is our first mother. The Quran teaches clearly that Adam was created directly by Allah, in paradise, from clay, and that Allah breathed His spirit into him.

To say that humanity came from a non-human species goes against the Quran’s teaching of Adam’s special creation. Shaykh Nuh Keller explains that this view denies what has been revealed, whether one says it was by Allah or by nature.

What Is and Is Not a Matter of Belief

The Sacred Law does not require you to believe anything specific about when Adam (peace be upon him) was created. Nor does it require you to take a position on whether other human-like beings existed before or with him. These are matters for investigation and study.

What we must believe is what Allah has revealed: Allah alone creates. Adam was created directly by Allah as the first human. All people descend from Adam and Eve. Allah has honored us with the gift of knowing Him.

Involuntary Doubts (Waswas) Are Not Sinful

Doubts that pass through the mind without your consent are not held against you. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught that Allah overlooks what occurs inwardly to the umma. The exception is what is acted upon or spoken [Bukhari; Muslim]

When such thoughts come, do not dwell on them. Say, “I believe in Allah.” Seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan. Turn your heart to remembrance, to the Quran, and to learning sound belief from a qualified teacher.

A Caution on Speech and Good Character

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” Faith is kept in the heart and guarded by our words. Good character helps faith to grow.

Asking Is a Key to Guidance; the Path Is Knowledge

Your question shows your concern and serves as a means to guidance. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The cure for ignorance is to ask.”

Use this opportunity to seek knowledge of your religion. Study sound belief with a qualified teacher, using the classical primers of the Maturidi and Ash‘ari schools. You can benefit from SeekersGuidance courses on belief and its foundations. Reading Shaykh Nuh Keller’s Sea Without Shore can also help settle the heart and clarify the mind.

May Allah grant you certainty, the peace of a heart firm in faith, and knowledge that removes every doubt.

And Allah knows best.
