Question

Is the income earned from working at a polling station in a Western election halal?

Answer

I pray you are well.

Yes, the income earned from working at a polling station in a Western election is halal. There is no inherent prohibition in such work.

Clarifying a Common Misunderstanding

Some people object to participation in elections by citing the statement, “Judgment belongs to Allah alone.” This statement is true in itself: Allah Most High has absolute and final authority. However, misunderstanding its application leads to confusion. As Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (Allah be pleased with him) said to the Khawarij, “A word of truth, through which falsehood is intended.”

Allah Most High has also allowed human beings to organize their affairs and govern themselves. Throughout Islamic history, governance involved consultation, deliberation, and human decision-making. Leaders would consult others, discuss matters collectively, and then make binding decisions for the public good. Human governance, administration, and selection of leadership do not contradict Allah’s ultimate sovereignty.

Voting and Shirk

Voting is not shirk. One does not vote to make someone a god, nor to give them divine authority. Rather, one chooses individuals or groups to manage worldly affairs such as education, public services, taxation, and administration.

This is no different in principle from:

  • Choosing a board to manage a mosque,
  • Appointing people to oversee a community project,
  • Selecting representatives to run an institution.

In none of these cases is divinity being attributed to human beings.

Working at a Polling Station

Working at a polling station is simply providing a lawful public service within an established civic process. There is nothing inherently sinful about facilitating an orderly election, and the income earned from such work is lawful.

Conclusion

  • Participating in elections is not shirk.
  • Working at a polling station is permissible.
  • Income earned from such work is halal.

If you worked at a polling station, you have not done anything wrong.

And Allah knows best.
