How Can a Muslim Invest Excess Wealth in a Way That Pleases Allah?
Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Question
How can a Muslim invest excess wealth in a way that pleases Allah Most High?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.
There are several sound and praiseworthy ways in which a Muslim can invest excess wealth in a manner that is pleasing to Allah Most High.
Retaining Wealth and Directing It Toward Good
One option is to retain the wealth and direct it toward good purposes. This includes making investments, but not solely for financial return. Instead, one should seek out investments that are financially viable while also supporting a cause that benefits humanity.
Many people invest their wealth in markets or large corporations that generate profits but may not contribute significantly to human well-being. Instead, there should be a focus on supporting worthy companies, Muslim startups, and projects that aim to benefit people while remaining profitable. Investing in such purpose-driven and ethical ventures aligns financial growth with moral responsibility.
Another way to retain wealth is to invest in one’s family. This includes freeing one’s children from debt, paying for their education, and empowering them through lawful means. Spending on one’s children, without neglecting other obligations and without spoiling them, is among the best ways to spend wealth. This, too, is a form of investment that pleases Allah when done with balance and wisdom.
Spending in the Way of Allah
Another way of investing excess wealth is to spend it in the way of Allah. This is a spiritual investment with lasting returns. Allah Most High says,
“Who will lend to Allah a good loan which Allah will multiply many times over?” [Quran, 2:245]
This goodly loan includes spending in the way of Allah, such as giving charity or offering an interest-free loan to someone in need. Through such loans, one may help another person start a business, clear debt, or avoid unlawful interest. Although the loan itself is returned without increase, the spiritual reward with Allah is immense.
Charity is also a powerful form of investment. Supporting educational initiatives, students of knowledge, and institutions that serve religion and society are among the most impactful ways to give. Whoever directs others toward good shares in the reward of all who benefit from it.
Endowments and Ongoing Charity
A further avenue for investing excess wealth is establishing an endowment, known as a waqf. Endowments do not need to be large. Historically, endowments existed to provide water, care for animals, support students, and serve travelers and laborers. In many Muslim cities, a significant portion of property was dedicated to waqf for educational and social purposes.
One may establish a small endowment, contribute to an existing endowment fund, or dedicate property or resources whose ongoing benefit continues after one’s lifetime. These forms of ongoing charity serve as a means of continuous reward and long-term benefit.
In summary, excess wealth can be invested responsibly by keeping it within the family, making ethical, purpose-driven investments, spending in the way of Allah through charity and interest-free loans, or establishing ongoing charity through endowments. Each of these is a meaningful investment, whether in this life or for the Hereafter.
