What Should My Hijab Be Covering?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

What are the limits of the face when wearing hijab? Do we need to cover our entire jawbones or just the underside of the jaw? Since the jawbone is part of the face I did not think it would be `awrah. Similarly, do we need to cover under the chin or is this not necessary?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

When one wears a hijab, the obligation is to cover her hair including the hairline, ears, and under the chin, if she is able, and especially when she prays. Her jawbone does not need to be covered. It is also recommended that she draw her hijab down and cover her chest.
