Can I Directly Read from the Quran during Tahajjud Prayers?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

Is it possible to take the position of Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad to read from the Quran from a physical copy in my Tahajjud prayers only as part of my goal to complete the recitation of the Qur’an in tahajjud?

Answer

I pray you are well. In the Hanafi school, the dominant position is that reading from a physical copy would invalidate the prayer. Resorting to another position without due need would not be permissible.

You could learn the basics of the Shafi’i prayer and do this if you like, as it is permissible in the Shafi’i school. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar]

May Allah grant you the best of both worlds.
