How Do I Determine The Type of Fluid Discharge Upon Waking Up and Throughout the Day?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

When I wake up to do wudu, I go to the bathroom and check my underwear to see if there is discharge. If there isn’t any discharge, I do wudu without doing istinja. Is my wudu and prayer valid? Also, if I’m going about my day and have a thought that makes me emit fluid, but it is still inside my vaginal lips, must I do a ghusl? For example, if the fluid isn’t seen on my underwear, but when I go to relieve myself, I see the fluid, must I do ghusl, or since it never really passed my vaginal lips and onto my underwear, can I just wipe it and do wudu?

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Upon Waking Up

When you wake up in the morning and find no discharge, your wudu and prayer will be valid.

Throughout the Day

When you go about your day and find some form of fluid, it is advised that you look at the timing, possible reasoning of the discharge, and the texture, with the guidelines below, and then determine which discharge it is.

Comparison of Different Vaginal Discharges

Normal Vaginal Discharge is  Completely white or clear, like cloudy lotion, egg whites, pasty, or tacky or clear. There is a difference of opinion. However, it is akin to sweat and pure and clean.

Discharge from Vaginal Infections is white, gray, or green. It is clumpy, fish stench, the vagina itches or burns, the vulva gets swollen, or the sex hurts. Wudu is required, and it’s filthy.

Arousal Fluid is clear, the quality of it is wet, sticky, and slippery, only exits upon arousal, and wudu is required.

Orgasmic Fluid is yellow, and the quality is thin and watery at the time of orgasm, a ghusl is required, and it is filthy.
