Is Throwing a Dead Bird in the Bin Permissible in Islam?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
Is it permissible to dispose of dead birds or small animals in a bag and place them in the bin if burial is not practical?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
It is generally recommended to bury the body of any living creature that passes away, as a sign of respect and to avoid any potential harm from the decomposition process.
Allah (Most High) says:
“There is not an animal on earth, nor a bird that flies with its wings, but they are communities like you.” [Quran, 6:38]
However, suppose burial is not practical or possible for smaller animals, such as birds. In that case, there is no specific prohibition in Sacred Law regarding their disposal in a bag and placing them in a bin.
Adhere to local civil regulations concerning the disposal of animal corpses. These regulations are put in place to prevent harm from decomposition, which may attract harmful creatures, microbes, and other dangers.
So, while disposal in a bin may be allowed in this situation, one must make sure that this method does not harm others or break local rules meant to protect the community’s health.
May Allah grant us wisdom and ease in our actions.
