Can I Work Temporarily at a Finance Company That Deals with Interest-Based Loans If I Have No Other Income?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Can I work temporarily at a finance company that deals with interest-based loans if I have no other income and am actively seeking halal employment?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Yes, you can work at the company until you find an alternative job while actively seeking to do so.
If someone is already employed at a finance company or bank, scholars advise him not to leave his job immediately. Instead, he should look for a permissible job elsewhere and leave the bank once he secures it.
The key point is that one must explore all possible means with the prayer of need (see link below) to find an alternative job. If someone puts in the effort and is willing to accept comparatively reduced benefits, there is no reason why a suitable job cannot be found.
