Is Partial Recitation with Ijaza Considered Valid in Qira’at?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it correct that a sanad ending with a book author in al-Nashr indicates transmission of knowledge, not complete recitation, while a sanad to a rawi implies complete recitation? Is partial recitation with ijaza for the rest valid? I’m struggling with doubts due to this.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

There are many types of ijazat in Canonical Variant Recitations of the Quran (Qira’at), and in some cases, issuing an authorisation (ijaza) after a partial reading of the Quran is permissible. This should not affect one’s faith, as it has no bearing on preserving the Quran.

A common practice among Quran reciters is giving each other authorisations as a form of blessing (ijazat tabarrukan). This is not given to students. Ibn Jazari (Allah have mercy on him) himself states that he was in the midst of reciting the verse (…إن الله يأمر بالعدل والإحسان وإيتاء ذي القربى) when his teacher passed away. He explains that his teacher had already given him the license to teach before he passed, but he did not complete that khatm.

My advice would be to study the Quranic sciences properly under qualified teachers. See the course below. Also, study a commentary on Tayyiba al-Nashr and then plan to complete the Quran in the Qira’at. Please do not rely on fragmented information that confuses the very fundamental basis upon which our religion is built.
