Can I Name My Daughter Maryam If My Other Daughter Is Maria?

Answered by Ustada Shazia Ahmad

Question

I was blessed with a beautiful daughter recently. I have another daughter whose name is Maria. Can I keep my newborn girl’s name Maryam as we like the name due to its importance in the Holy Quran? Are Maria and Maryam the same names and have the same meaning? I really appreciate your advice in this regard.

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah make your baby the coolness of your eyes and allow you to watch her and her sister grow to full maturity as pious women.

Maria & Maryam

It is fine to name your daughters these two names. Maria is the name of the servant girl of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), while Maryam is the name of the mother of `Isa. These two names are not used because of their linguistic meanings so I don’t know their meanings. They are used for the women they represent, both honoured and of high rank with their Lord.
