We Tried to Meet Our Siblings During Our Haj and Umra But Refused to Meet Us

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I have two questions.
(1) During our Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage, we attempted to visit our brothers and sisters, but unfortunately, they refused to meet with us despite our repeated efforts to connect with them.
(2) Is it impermissible to work on the 10th of Ashura and celebrate it as New Year?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Allah accept your Haj and Umrah. You have tried your best to connect with them many times. Allah Most High will reward you for your efforts. Continue to do so. This is our prophetic teaching, not just when we go on a sacred journey and pray for them to soften their hearts.

Good Relations With Family

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Learn your lineages to solidify your family ties. Verily, keeping family ties causes love among the kinship, enriches the wealth, and increases the lifespan.” [Tirmidhi]

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have relatives with whom I try to relate, but they cut me off. I treat them well, but they mistreat me. I am forbearing with them, but they are harsh with me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If it is as you say, then it is as if you threw hot ashes at them. Allah will be with you as a supporter as long as you remain like so.” [Muslim]

May our hearts turn towards Allah Most High and give us every success to fulfill His commands and the rights of our family and fellow human beings, Amin.

Working on the 10th of Muharram

It is not impermissible to work on the 10th of Muharram. However, if your workplace, school, or organization keeps it a day off, it is OK to do so, as the day has many virtues. The Islamic New Year starts on the 1st of Muharram. We are in the year 1445 AH. See the link below.
