Will My Stepson Become My Mahram When He Reaches Adulthood?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Will my stepson become my mahram when he reaches adulthood?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

A stepson is a mahram and will always remain a mahram for the stepmother.

Allah (Most High) said, “Do not marry former wives of your fathers—except what was done previously. It was indeed a shameful, despicable, and evil practice.” [Quran, 4:22]

A stepson is a mahram and will always remain a Mahram for the stepmother, even after the father’s death. However, if there is concern about inappropriate behavior, the stepson and stepmother should avoid being alone together and should not travel without the presence of another Mahram.

[Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Who is a Mahram?

A Mahram is he with whom marriage is permanently unlawful, and this permanent unlawfulness/prohibition of marriage is established in three ways: The relationship of lineage, the relationship through fosterage, and the relationship through marriage. See the detailed link below.
