Does the Use of Lubricant During a Medical Exam Break the Fast?

Question

Does the use of lubricant during a medical exam while fasting break the fast, and if so, does it require expiation (kaffara)?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

If during a medical exam something of substance was entered into the body from either the nose, mouth, rear part (the depth of a supository—3cm), vagina, or an open wound in the torso such that the object has now entered the body cavity and is no longer visible externally, the fast is broken. [Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah]

If a dry object was inserted into these areas such that a portion of the object remained outside the body, this does not break the fast. [Ibid.]

If this object had lubrication on it (or the like) when it was inserted, the fast is broken despite a portion of the object remaining outside the body. [Ibid.]
