Should I Wear Hijab Now or Wait Until I Can Wear It with Jilbab?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I’m a teen girl who became religious a year ago. I do not wear the hijab, but my closet is somewhat modest. I’ve wanted to wear the hijab for a while now, but I’m afraid that it’ll be useless since I don’t have the means, nor am I emotionally ready to jump to full jilbab (or correct hijab).

I’m the only Muslim girl in my school, so it feels pretty scary. I know hijab is an obligation. Should I wear the hijab, even if it’s not perfect, or should I wait until I can wear it correctly?

Answer

You should most definitely start wearing hijab now. It’s impossible to be perfect, and no one should seek perfection. Rather, we act upon what our Lord tells us to do, especially if our heart agrees. Once you start, you will find tremendous blessings and goodness come your way, and I’m certain that Allah will strengthen you and facilitate many other good deeds through it. I congratulate you on your intention. Please don’t hesitate to follow up with us.

My Lord! Uplift my heart for me, and make my task easy, and remove the impediment from my tongue, so people may understand my speech [Quran, 20:26-28]
