What Are the Limits of Obedience to a Spiritual Guide?
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
What is the Islamic perspective on a spiritual guide testing students with controlling behavior or manipulative commands under the pretext of loyalty?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
The relationship between the spiritual guide (shaykh) and their disciple is immensely important and has been an established practice since the beginning of Islam, starting first with the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) and his companions.
Allah Most High says,
“…That is one of the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides is truly guided. But whoever He leaves to stray, you will never find for them a guiding mentor.” [Quran; 18:17]
Allah Most High alludes to the fact that those led astray were not granted a mentor to guide them to the right path. The inverse of this would be that if Allah wishes to guide someone, He may put in their life a mentor to guide them to the right way.
There is no doubt that loyalty and trust are important for the disciple to have towards their guide; however, this is only if the spiritual guide themselves prove to be trustworthy followers of the Prophetic guidance, have themselves purified their ego, and are only guiding others solely for the sake of Allah Most High within the bounds of the Sacred law.
Conditions of Loyalty
If the Shaykh commands anything that is sinful in the Sacred law, it is impermissible for the pupil to follow them.
If the Shaykh commands anything that is clearly harmful to the pupil, this, too, the pupil will not follow.
That said, the Shaykh’s role is to guide pupils to transcend their weaknesses and character flaws and subdue their ego. In doing so, there may be certain instructions that the pupil finds difficult and is bothered by, not because they go against the above two conditions, but because they challenge their ego.
Conditions of a True Shaykh
Imam ‘Abdullah bin ‘Alawi al-Haddad (Allah have mercy on him), a great Yemeni scholar of the 11th century, said in a famous poem:
It is crucial to have a guide (shaykh), upon whose path you travel
to Allah, who is from those whose egos have been purified.
One who is from the people of knowledge, who has gnosis of his Lord
If you cannot find such a person, then truthfulness is the best conveyance. [Haddad, Durr al-Manzum]
Summary
It is hard to determine whether the spiritual guide in your question is controlling or manipulating people. It is therefore very important to vet anyone whom one is planning to take on as a spiritual guide.
They should examine the potential guide in the light of the Prophetic character. Does this person remind you of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace)? Do they exude mercy, fairness, selflessness, love of Allah, striving for the Hereafter, serving creation, and wishing well for everyone?
Thereafter, one should pray to Allah Most High to guide them to the right choice before making such an important decision. If one finds in their heart some reservations based on the above guidelines, perhaps that is a sign. With this process, one will be protected from potential charlatans by whom one may be harmed.
Hope this helps
