Is It Sinful To Tell Your Wife That You Love Her More Than Anything Else?

Question: Salam, would it be haram for someone to tell their wife they love her more than everything else? Since you are supposed to love Allah more than everything else.

Assalamu alaykum,

Thank you for your question. Ma sha Allah, it is kind and thoughtful of you to consider your wife’s feelings and what is the right thing to say by your Lord.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his child, his father, and all the people.“ [Ibn Majah]

According to this hadith, it would be wise and truthful not to tell your wife that you love her more than anything else so that it may not include you in the meaning of this Prophetic saying. She herself should also love Allah and His Messenger more than she loves you. One should teach the same to their children; they should love their Lord and His Messenger more than their parents. This is not insensitive but rather the very basis of our existence.
