Does Finding Hair on Bedding in Ihram Require Expiation?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
What is the ruling for finding scalp or body hair on a pillow or bedsheet after sleeping in ihram, and does it affect one’s state?
Similarly, is it permissible to shower while in ihram if hair falls out without rubbing the body or head?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Seeing scalp or body hair on one’s pillow or bedsheet is not a violation requiring expiation.
Shower in Ihram
The spirit of Ihram is to embrace a messy, ungroomed state, reflecting a person devoted to the love and worship of Allah while letting go of worldly attachments. However, if one does take a shower, one should ensure that hair does not fall; if it does, one will give charity (sadaqa).
He may scratch his head or body gently if he fears that hair or lice might fall off. Because if one hair (or louse) falls, he must give charity of something small; if three fall, he must give the equivalent of a handful of food in charity.” [Mukarram Shah, Gunyat al-Nasik fi Bugya al-Manasik; Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Charity
Charity can be given anywhere. For most violations, the amount required for charity is the same as the sadaqat al-fitr, specifically half a ṣa’ of wheat, which is approximately 2.2 kilograms of wheat or its monetary equivalent.
