Is My Income Halal If I Neglected Protocol but the Company Said No Compensation Is Needed?
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
Is my income halal if I delivered food without properly using the hot bag, but the company said no compensation was needed?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
Dear questioner,
May Allah bless you for your concern for the permissibility of your income. This concern is a sign of taqwa (God-consciousness) and is beloved by Allah Most High.
Allah says, “Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.” [Quran, 4:58]
Responsibility and Fulfillment of Contractual Duties
When you work for a company, you are expected to fulfil the responsibilities they set out for you. Failing to do so could, in some cases, be considered a breach of trust or negligence.
However, if you informed the company or they were aware of your actions, and they explicitly stated that no compensation or penalty was required, then they have effectively waived their rights. In such a case, your income remains halal, provided that you were not intentionally deceptive or dishonest.
The Principle of Ijara (Wage Contracts)
In Islamic law, the contract of employment (ijara) is based on mutual agreement. If the employer accepts your work and chooses not to deduct from your wage or penalize you for any shortcoming they are aware of, then your wages are valid.
Allah (Most High) says, “Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, nor deliberately bribe authorities in order to devour a portion of others’ property, knowing that it is a sin.” [Quran, 2:188]
Striving for Excellence (Ihsan)
That said, as Muslims, we are called to a higher standard: to do our work with ihsan (excellence), trustworthiness, and diligence. Even if your income is technically halal, it is important to reflect and take this as an opportunity to improve in fulfilling our responsibilities with care and integrity.
Conclusion
Your income is halal if the company was aware of the situation and chose not to deduct anything or hold you accountable. Going forward, aim to uphold your trust and strive for excellence in your work. As our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Indeed, Allah loves when any of you does a job that he perfects it.” [Tabarani, Mu‘jam Awsat & Abi Ya‘la, Musnad]
And Allah knows best.
