As a Female Convert Who Should Act as My Wali if My Father is Hostile Toward My Faith?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
I am a female revert seeking marriage but unsure who my wali is. My father has shown hostility toward my faith, and my Muslim male relatives live abroad. My younger brother is not Muslim. Who should act as my wali in this situation?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
A Muslim women without a Muslim guardian (wali) will appoint a trustworthy Muslim male as her agent (wakil) to oversee that the groom and conditions of the contract are aligned with her self-interest.[Maydani, al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab]
This is as simple as saying to someone, I appoint you as my wakil to marry me to so and so.
