Can I Enroll in a Health Benefits Package That Includes Life Insurance?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question

Can I enroll in a health benefits package that includes life insurance if I need the medical coverage for treatment?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate.

Yes, it is permissible to enroll in such a package when the primary benefit is lawful, and the need is genuine.

This is the position of reliable contemporary Hanafi scholars. It is based on the established principle that need (haja) can take the ruling of necessity (darura) when the conditions are met. [Basis: Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa al-Naza’ir; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

The Basis: Need for Medical Coverage

In many countries, particularly the United States, medical costs are overwhelming. Even those who are otherwise financially stable cannot bear them without coverage.

When the package is primarily permissible (such as one centered on medical coverage), the secondary problematic elements may be excused. Life insurance within such a package is tolerated in light of the overriding need.

Allah Most High says, “Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship.” [Quran, 2:185] This ease is principled and guided by Divine Guidance, as explained by mainstream qualified scholars.

This verse establishes the governing principle: the Sacred Law (Sharia) accommodates genuine need and does not impose unbearable burdens–in a principled manner.

Explore Customization

Consider whether the package can be customized. Many companies — especially larger ones — offer alternative packages alongside the default. Some employers provide options that are ethically structured or even Sacred Law-compliant in how funds are invested.

It is worth approaching your employer to ask what options are available. Many people have been surprised to find that Shariah-compliant benefits packages do exist in North America.

Rulings Follow the Primary, Dominant Elements

The governing principle is that the ruling follows the predominant element. When a package is primarily permissible, and the need is genuine, the secondary problematic details are excused.

One takes the means of seeking what is best, and Allah opens doors for those who strive.

May Allah grant you ease, beneficial provision, and well-being.

And Allah knows best.
