Can I Marry My Grandmother’s Half-Sister?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch

Question

Is it halal or haram to marry my grandmother’s half sister? She is my great half-aunt. She shares the same father as my grandmother, but a different mother.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

It is not permissible to marry your grandmother’s half-sister. She is, as you mentioned, your grand-aunt and is therefore your mahram (blood relative) whom you cannot marry. [Maydani, al-Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab]

Hope this helps
