Can Non-Practicing Muslim Marry a Hindu Woman Who Agrees to Convert?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it valid for a non-practicing Muslim man to marry a Hindu woman who secretly agrees to convert to Islam, despite family opposition and legal challenges?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
If the girl sincerely embraces Islam, not merely for marriage, it is considered Islamically valid. However, a conversion lacking genuine belief, undertaken solely for the sake of marriage, is deemed invalid in Islam and may be regarded as a mockery of the faith.
Marriage
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,
“A woman is married for four things: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty, or for her piety. Select the pious, may you be blessed!” [Bukhari; Muslim]
This hadith applies to both genders.
If this relates directly to yourself or someone you know, we urge you to please consult a reliable local scholar about the specifics of the situation.
