Is Buying Taxed Goods Sinful In Islam?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it sinful to buy items with government-imposed taxes like VAT, and can laypeople advise a Muslim government on un-Islamic laws, or should that be left to scholars?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Purchasing taxed goods isn’t sinful; it’s part of the societal context. VAT and similar taxes fund infrastructure, healthcare, and education, which are integral to modern governance. As a layperson, you can raise concerns about injustice, but do so ethically and consult reliable scholars when needed. See the detailed link below.
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
“The Din (religion) is nasiha (goodwill, advice, or sincerity).” We said, “To whom?” He (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.” [Muslim]
