Is It Permissible to Make Online Purchases Before the Second Adhan of Jumu‘a?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat
Question
Is it permissible to make online purchases before the second adhan of Jumu‘a?
Answer
I pray you are well.
If a person is obligated to pray Salat al-Jumu‘a, then it is not permissible for them to engage in buying and selling, whether online or in person, from the time the adhan for Jumu‘a is given until the prayer has concluded.
Who Is Obligated by This Ruling?
This ruling applies to an individual who is:
- An adult male,
- Sane and healthy,
- A resident (not a traveler),
- Living in a town or city where Jumu‘a is established.
Such a person is required to attend Jumu‘a, and during that time, financial transactions are not permitted.
Scope of the Prohibition
From the time the adhan of Jumu‘a is called—commonly the adhan corresponding to Dhuhr—until the Jumu‘a prayer is completed, one should refrain from all forms of trade. This includes:
- In-person buying and selling,
- Online purchases,
- Any other financial transactions.
The only exception is a transaction that directly enables one to attend Jumu‘a, such as paying for transport to the mosque.
Practical Considerations
In places with multiple mosques, adhans may be called at different times. In such cases, a person may follow the timing of the mosque where they normally pray Jumu‘a. When that adhan is called, they should cease buying and selling and focus on preparing for the prayer. Once the Jumu‘a prayer is over, normal transactions may resume.
Those Not Obligated by Jumu‘a
For those upon whom Jumu‘a is not obligatory—such as women, travelers, or those with a valid excuse—there is no restriction. They may continue to buy and sell, including making online purchases, during this time without any issue.
Summary
- If Jumu‘a is obligatory upon you, do not engage in trade after the adhan until the prayer is completed.
- This applies equally to online and in-person transactions.
- Those not required to pray Jumu‘a are not bound by this restriction.
And Allah knows best.
