May I Use the Lower Jeweler Buyback Price When Calculating Zakat on Gold?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question

When calculating zakat on gold jewelry, may I use the lower selling price offered by jewelers rather than the current market value?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate.

Yes, you may use the buyback price when calculating your zakat on gold jewelry. This is what is required in our tradition.

The Hanafi school calculates zakat on gold using the realistic selling price at the time zakat is due. That means the price you could actually realize on a sale in your local market. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

For jewelry, the realistic selling price is the amount a jeweler would pay you for your gold, based on its weight and quality. The retail price includes the cost of craftsmanship and dealer markup, which you would not receive if you sold the item. Therefore, it is not used for zakat calculation.

In practice, you can ask one or two trustworthy jewelers for a quote on what they would pay for your gold. If the quotes differ, take the average.

Multiply this by the weight of your zakatable gold, and then give 2.5% of that amount in zakat to someone eligible.

What You Could Sell It For — That Is the Basis

Zakat is based on actual wealth, not on a theoretical retail value. This reflects the mercy and wisdom of our tradition.

May Allah place baraka in what you keep and what you give.

And Allah knows best.
