What Do I Do If I Bleed on the 15th Day of Purity?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
My period started early on the 14th day of tuhr, causing confusion and stress. The bleeding is heavy, dark red, and thick. I’m unsure if I should keep praying, which is difficult due to my struggle with waswas about purity and wudu. Washing, wudu, and praying take over an hour, and praying during heavy bleeding is hard.
By the expected period end, bleeding will likely slow or stop. A scholar advised me to stop praying on the 15th day of tuhr. I’m in pain and distress, unsure of what to do.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I hope you are in good health.
A woman cannot have two periods unless separated by at least 15 days of purity (tuhr). If she sees blood after 14 days, she reverts to her usual cycle. Only the blood during her regular cycle is considered menstruation; other bleeding is irregular bleeding (istihada), during which you must pray and fast.
The minimum period of purity (tuhr) is fifteen days, because the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “The minimum duration of menstruation is three days, its maximum is ten days, and the minimum period between two menstrual cycles is fifteen days.”
This is how it is mentioned in al-Ghayah. The Companions unanimously agreed upon this ruling. Since it is a legally fixed period, it is treated like the minimum period required for establishing residence (iqama). [Zayla‘i, Tabyin al-Haqa’iq]
Know that Allah Most High has not made you responsible for acting on doubts or misgivings. Allah has made the religion and its practices easy for His servants, so please make it easy on yourself. Do not over-worry. May Allah give you every success and ease.
And Allah knows best.
