Question

Is it true that Imam Hasan (Allah be pleased with him) was poisoned by his wife Jada Bint Jash, and she was paid by Mu‘awiya (Allah be pleased with him) so that Imam Hasan (Allah be pleased with him) doesn’t become the caliph?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

ِImam Hasan (Allah be pleased with him) was not paid to be poisoned by Mu‘awiya (Allah be pleased with him).

Ibn Kathir (Allah have mercy on him) in Al-Bidaya Wal-Nihaya states:

Some of them have narrated that Yazid ibn Mu‘awiya wrote to Ja’da to poison Hasan and that he would marry her afterward. So she carried it out, and after Hasan passed away, she sent a message to him (Yazid), and he replied, “We could not trust you with Hasan; do you think we could trust you for ourselves?” I believe this is not authentic, and being incorrect regarding his father, Muawiya, is even more appropriate.

Dhahabi (Allah have mercy on him) said in Tarikh al-Islam:

This is a matter that is not correct; who was there to see it?

Ibn al-‘Arabi (Allah have mercy on him) said in al ‘Awasim min al-Qawasim:

If it is said he secretly conspired to have Hasan poisoned, we say that this claim is far-fetched for two reasons:

  • One of them was the fact that Hasan handed over the khilafa willingly, and there was no incentive for Mu‘awiya to have Hasan killed.
  • Secondly, the narration regarding it is unreliable, and several scholars have identified flaws in the narration.
