Am I Sinful If My Digital Drawing Services Are Later Used in Haram Things?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I’m an artist offering digital drawing services for game and animation props like markers, clipboards, and gems. Most clients are non-Muslims. I avoid drawing haram content (immodest clothing, kissing, magic) and plan to set boundaries. However, their final projects may include music, romance, or personal content I wouldn’t add. I aim to earn halal income and avoid inappropriate material. Is it sinful if my drawings are later used in haram things? Is it okay to provide these tools if I avoid creating sinful content?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

If you avoid creating haram content yourself, like immodesty, magic, etc., and your drawings are general-purpose props like clipboards, gems, etc. that could be used in both halal and haram ways, you are not sinful for how others later use your work, as long as your intent and contribution are halal.

General Accountability of Sin

In general, one has no control over the actions of others and will not be held accountable by Allah for their deeds. Allah says: “And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.” [Quran 6:164]

Accountability for Enabling Sin

If our actions enable or facilitate sinning for others, we incur a share of the blame. Allah says: “Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share in the reward, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a share in the burden. And Allah is Watchful over all things.” [Quran 4:85]

Degrees of Assisting Another in Sin

In the Hanafi School, this has levels:

  1. It is haram to do that which is a direct cause of sin;
  2. It is disliked to do that which is an indirect cause of sin;
  3. It is better to avoid that which could be a cause for sin.

It is impermissible (haram) to do something that directly assists in sin, slightly disliked (makruh tanzihan) to do that which indirectly assists in sin, and better to avoid something that may be a possible cause for sin.

Setting Boundaries Is Wise

You’re already planning to set boundaries, as you have mentioned, for example, stating in your terms what you won’t draw. This is excellent. It:

  • Clarifies your ethics
  • Protects your conscience
  • Helps avoid misunderstandings
